<p>So, we are building into our <a href="https://ifwelearndifferently.com?p=82">ARD (Admission, Review, Dismissal) </a></p>
<p>that he is riding the big kid bus.</p>
<p>We are practicing now, and here are some photos of how that looks.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s called Backward Chaining by occupational therapists, and Backward Design by educators.</p>
<p>You start with the last step and practice until your child masters it.</p>
<p>And then you add the previous step and include it to the process.</p>
<p>Keep this up, each time adding the previous step to the entire flow.</p>
<p>Soon, you will be at the beginning step and your child can do it all.</p>
<p>So, back to the bus independence:  Mom does less and less.  John does more and more.<img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" class="alignright wp-image-1503" src="https://i0.wp.com/ifwelearndifferently.comwp-content/uploads/2017/03/Bus-2-576x1024.jpg?resize=260%2C462&#038;ssl=1" alt="" width="260" height="462" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/ifwelearndifferently.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Bus-2.jpg?resize=576%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 576w, https://i0.wp.com/ifwelearndifferently.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Bus-2.jpg?resize=154%2C274&amp;ssl=1 154w, https://i0.wp.com/ifwelearndifferently.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Bus-2.jpg?resize=169%2C300&amp;ssl=1 169w, https://i0.wp.com/ifwelearndifferently.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Bus-2.jpg?resize=225%2C400&amp;ssl=1 225w, https://i0.wp.com/ifwelearndifferently.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Bus-2.jpg?resize=82%2C146&amp;ssl=1 82w, https://i0.wp.com/ifwelearndifferently.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Bus-2.jpg?resize=600%2C1066&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/ifwelearndifferently.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Bus-2.jpg?w=691&amp;ssl=1 691w" sizes="(max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px" /></p>
<p>Some days, when John is lollygagging, I have laid his stuff on the ground and walked away.</p>
<p>Toward school.  With neighbors and friends watching me.</p>
<p>I smile and wait out of sight.</p>
<p>Until John catches up.</p>
<p>I fade my prompt at every opportunity.</p>
<p>Once he gets ahead of me, I stay out of eye-sight as he rides on to school.</p>
<p>As our days of training have progressed,</p>
<p>sometimes he looks back,</p>
<p>sometimes not.</p>
<p>Twice now he has caught me peeking after him.</p>
<p>He was laughing and so was I at Mom busted.<img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" class="alignright wp-image-1505" src="https://i0.wp.com/ifwelearndifferently.comwp-content/uploads/2017/03/Bus-4a-532x1024.jpg?resize=333%2C641&#038;ssl=1" alt="" width="333" height="641" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/ifwelearndifferently.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Bus-4a.jpg?resize=532%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 532w, https://i0.wp.com/ifwelearndifferently.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Bus-4a.jpg?resize=142%2C274&amp;ssl=1 142w, https://i0.wp.com/ifwelearndifferently.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Bus-4a.jpg?resize=156%2C300&amp;ssl=1 156w, https://i0.wp.com/ifwelearndifferently.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Bus-4a.jpg?resize=768%2C1477&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/ifwelearndifferently.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Bus-4a.jpg?resize=760%2C1462&amp;ssl=1 760w, https://i0.wp.com/ifwelearndifferently.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Bus-4a.jpg?resize=208%2C400&amp;ssl=1 208w, https://i0.wp.com/ifwelearndifferently.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Bus-4a.jpg?resize=82%2C158&amp;ssl=1 82w, https://i0.wp.com/ifwelearndifferently.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Bus-4a.jpg?resize=600%2C1154&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/ifwelearndifferently.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Bus-4a.jpg?w=853&amp;ssl=1 853w" sizes="(max-width: 333px) 100vw, 333px" /></p>
<p>Once he is at school, I do follow the sidewalk to the end, and wave at the crossing guard.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t want the school thinking I am irresponsible : )</p>
<p>He eventually went by himself:  from the car, through the crossing guard, into school.<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignright wp-image-1506" src="https://i0.wp.com/ifwelearndifferently.comwp-content/uploads/2017/03/Bus-3a-319x1024.jpg?resize=145%2C466&#038;ssl=1" alt="" width="145" height="466" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/ifwelearndifferently.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Bus-3a.jpg?resize=319%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 319w, https://i0.wp.com/ifwelearndifferently.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Bus-3a.jpg?resize=85%2C274&amp;ssl=1 85w, https://i0.wp.com/ifwelearndifferently.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Bus-3a.jpg?resize=93%2C300&amp;ssl=1 93w, https://i0.wp.com/ifwelearndifferently.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Bus-3a.jpg?resize=62%2C200&amp;ssl=1 62w, https://i0.wp.com/ifwelearndifferently.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Bus-3a.jpg?w=410&amp;ssl=1 410w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 145px) 100vw, 145px" /></p>
<p>So try backward chaining (where we start with mastery of the last thing,</p>
<p>working our way backward toward mastery of the first thing),</p>
<p>fade from helping at each step <a href="https://ifwelearndifferently.com?p=1199">after getting out the front door.</a></p>
<p>Also, I have been told to get John an assigned seat on the bus in the front row(s).</p>
<p>As he is able to master the sensory environment,</p>
<p>the new everything of the school,</p>
<p>and learn what to absorb (and what to NOT absorb) of the bus behaviors of peers,</p>
<p>then we can move toward a longer tether.</p>
<p>For now, one step at a time.</p>
<p>Backward chaining toward independence</p>
<p>and handling natural consequences of life.</p>
<p>Maybe this will be useful in your child&#8217;s life forward.</p>
<p>Peace be with us,</p>
<p>Gayle</p>
