To actually read. Not just fake it.

We had to go back to basic phonetic awareness.

Vowel sounds.

Consonant sounds.

The learning he missed in Pre-K and Kindergarten.

We were so distracted with other interventions

that Mom got lulled into a false sense of well-being

because he could memorize flash card words.

So, back to what is working.

It is called explicit instruction.

When you teach everything.

When you assume nothing.

We could talk for 2 hours (easy) on the topic of

“Help, My Kid/GrandKid Hates to Read! What Can I Do About That?”

We would talk about all the steps along the way to best practices on literacy.

He is making progress.

He smiles now, whereas before he would do all he could to escape.
